Introduction:
Manual lymphatic drainage is a type of massage which, by applying pressure, increases the movement of the lymph (an extracellular fluid that is rick in fats, proteins, and large molecules resulting from cellular degradation) to the lymph nodes, filtering it and returning it to the circulatory system. These fluids are retained in subcutaneous tissue, causing edema and pain.
Lymphatic drainage helps in the edema absorption process, namely in cases of mastectomy and lymphedema resulting from the reduction in the transport capacity of the lymphatic system. It also improves the immunological system by stimulating the production of lymphocytes in the cortical region of lymph nodes. In addition, lymphatic drainage has a soothing and relaxing effect.
